Mercedes Intensifies Efforts to Enhance Race Starts

George Russell has revealed that the Mercedes team is diligently working to improve their race starts, a weakness they've struggled with despite their strong performance in the current season. With four front-row lockouts in the first three Grands Prix and Sprint, neither Russell nor his teammate has managed to take the lead after the opening lap. However, the team's pace has been sufficient to recover and secure wins in the initial three races. Ferrari has shown exceptional starting prowess, attributed to their smaller turbo, which enables quicker spin-up times and facilitates finding the optimal launch window. Drivers have limited opportunities to practice starts, restricted to the end of free practice sessions during a Grand Prix weekend. Russell emphasized that while direct practice is scarce, the team is heavily focused on analyzing data to address their weakness. 'There's a lot going on behind the scenes,' Russell stated during Pirelli tire testing in Germany. The team utilizes simulator days to analyze the first three races and prepare for upcoming events, including the Miami and Montreal sprint races. Although they cannot practice starts during tire testing, the team is dedicated to improving through data analysis, acknowledging the challenges posed by the sport's limited practice opportunities.
