Gibbs' new contract includes a guaranteed $51.5 million, as announced by his agents, Athletes First. The Pro Bowler's first appearance on the field since the start of the Lions' training camp coincided with the announcement, signaling a successful negotiation between the Lions and Gibbs' representatives.
Gibbs had been participating in team meetings but had not practiced until the deal was imminent. His performance in the 2025 season was notable, with 1,223 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns, 77 receptions, and 616 yards. This development follows closely on the heels of other significant contracts in the NFL, including a two-year, $44 million deal for Colts running back Jonathan Taylor and a three-year extension for Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, which briefly made him the highest-paid running back before Gibbs' deal.
