The England Boxing National Amateur Championships showcased the future of the sport, with talented boxers demonstrating their skills in the elite finals held in Derby. Ruby White, a World U19 champion and four-time European age group champion, secured her first senior national title in the flyweight category, defeating Madi Gittens of Box Club. White, from Sturminster Newton, extended her impressive winning streak with a unanimous decision victory, remaining unbeaten in over 60 contests. "I'm thrilled to have proved people wrong by winning this tournament as a first-year senior.
The leap from youth to senior level is significant, but I've shown that I belong on the big stage and hope to compete for Great Britain soon," White said in an interview. White attributed her success to her strong desire to win and rigorous training regimen. "My determination and willpower to be the best are unmatched," she added. In the men's flyweight division, Billy Macey became a two-time national champion after his opponent, Yusuf Uddin, was disqualified and subsequently shoved the referee.
Macey emphasized the importance of sportsmanship, stating, "Regardless of the outcome, one must maintain their dignity and composure. There's no need for unsportsmanlike behavior." He also expressed his pride in following in the footsteps of legendary fighters like Joe Calzaghe, who won the championship three times. Adekali Kargbo of De Hood impressed the crowd by dethroning reigning 90kg champion Akinola Tijani with a 4-1 split decision. Clinton Achusim from Longsight won the super-heavyweight title in a thrilling bout against Finchley's Anthony Ibekwe.
"I enjoyed every minute of it. This is what we train for," Achusim said, highlighting his ability to adapt and box effectively. Amo Singh from Repton and GB boxer Joe Turner also secured victories in their respective categories. Turner expressed his confidence, saying, "I was determined to win, and no one was going to take that belt away from me.
I'm made for moments like these, and I'm certain I'll become a world champion as a professional one day." The GB team is set to compete in the World Boxing Cup event in Brazil, featuring a talented lineup of boxers, including Sacha Hickey, Lauren Mackie, and Chantelle Reid in the women's category, and Ellis Trowbridge, Will Hewitt, and Teagn Stott in the men's category. Stott, who won silver at the World Boxing Championships, is looking forward to testing himself against top-level international opponents and gaining more experience in the heavyweight division.
