McLaren Probes Mysterious Issues After Chinese GP Setback

McLaren is investigating the unexpected power unit issues that prevented Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris from starting the Chinese Grand Prix. The drivers were set to begin from the third row, but unrelated problems with the same power unit component forced them to watch from the sidelines. This marked Piastri's second consecutive failure to complete a Grand Prix, following a crash in Australia, while Norris experienced his first career DNS. Team principal Stella expressed frustration, stating that the team, along with engine supplier Mercedes, would examine the cause of the problems. "We were unable to compete due to technical issues, which is disappointing for everyone involved," Stella said. "We'll regroup, identify the problems, and move forward in Japan." During preparations, the team discovered an electrical issue with Norris' car, which they were unable to fix. Later, another problem was found with Piastri's car, also related to the electrical side of the power unit. Stella described the coincidence of two distinct issues occurring simultaneously as "extremely unfortunate." The team will work together with Mercedes to investigate and prevent similar incidents in the future. The setback comes as Norris defends his title and McLaren aims for a third consecutive constructors' championship. Despite being around half a second slower than Mercedes, the team has shown its ability to outdevelop rivals over the course of a season. Stella emphasized that the loss of track time and points is "detrimental" to their campaign. "We're losing ground, and these points could be crucial at the end of the season," he said. "Every lap counts in 2026, but we're learning quickly, and we believe we're in a good position to optimize our power units." The next Formula 1 event will be the Japanese Grand Prix, taking place at the iconic Suzuka Circuit on March 27-29.
