Exeter Clinches Victory Over Benetton with Slade's Winning Penalty

In a nail-biting finish, a late penalty kick by Henry Slade allowed Exeter to narrowly defeat Benetton 44-41, securing their spot in the Challenge Cup semi-final against Ulster in Belfast. The hosts had taken the lead 41-38 with just 15 minutes remaining, courtesy of a try from Jacob Umaga, but Slade's precise kicking leveled the score four minutes later, and he sealed the win with another penalty in the 78th minute, much to the dismay of the home crowd. The first half was marked by a frenetic pace, with Exeter initially leading 14-7 following an early score by Olly Woodburn and a penalty try. They extended their lead to 24-14 after Immanuel Feyi-Waboso's try and Slade's successful conversion and subsequent penalty. Benetton, however, drew level by the break, thanks to an exceptional try from Onisi Ratave, accompanied by a conversion and penalty from Umaga. Exeter regained the lead early in the second half with Harvey Skinner's converted try, but Bautista Bernasconi's effort brought Benetton back on level terms. Exeter pulled ahead 38-31 when Andrea Zambonin scored from close range in the 48th minute, but Umaga's second penalty and his try, which he also converted, gave Benetton their first lead since the eighth minute. Ultimately, Slade's decisive kick settled the outcome. In another quarter-final match, reigning Investec Champions Cup holders Bordeaux overcame Toulouse 30-15, setting up a semi-final encounter with Bath. Toulouse made a strong start at Stade Chaban-Delmas but faced stiff resistance from Bordeaux's defense before Maxime Lamothe broke through in the 23rd minute. Toulouse responded immediately after the restart, with Yoram Moefana failing to catch the kick-off, allowing Romain Ntamack to exploit the opportunity and score on the right. A significant stoppage occurred late in the first half when Toulouse prop Dorian Aldegheri made contact with Damian Penaud's head while he was kicking the ball, resulting in a 20-minute red card for the dangerous challenge. Penaud was forced to undergo a head injury assessment. Despite this setback, Toulouse took the lead into the break following a sweeping move that sent Teddy Thomas clear down the right, establishing a 12-5 advantage. After Thomas Ramos extended Toulouse's lead with an early second-half penalty, Bordeaux fought back. Matthieu Jalibert collected his own kick-through on the right before diving over, and Toulouse's woes deepened when Antoine Dupont was yellow-carded for a trip in the 56th minute. Bordeaux seized control of the tie with Ben Tameifuna's try and Maxime Lucu's long-range penalty just after the hour. Any lingering hopes of a Toulouse comeback were extinguished six minutes from time when Arthur Retiere scored Bordeaux's fourth try in the corner, followed by another Lucu penalty.
