Wilshere Secures Maiden Managerial Trophy as Luton Claim Vertu Trophy

Luton manager Jack Wilshere has earned his first managerial trophy after his team defeated Stockport 3-1 in the Vertu Trophy final. Wilshere, a former Arsenal and England player with two FA Cup wins, achieved this milestone in his debut season as a manager, thanks to goals from Emilio Lawrence and a double from Nahki Wells. Wilshere's primary objective is to restore the club's former glory, following successive relegations that have seen Luton drop from the Premier League in 2024 to 10th place in League One. The victory marked Luton's 10th Wembley appearance and provided another memorable moment, comparable to their 1988 League Cup win against Arsenal and the 2023 Championship play-off final triumph over Coventry. For Stockport, the loss was a disappointing one, with the team having only one win in seven Wembley appearances and not having beaten Luton in 18 matches since 1968. Stockport has also lost all three EFL Trophy finals, including the previous two in 1992 and 1993. The match saw several key moments, including a denied penalty for Luton in the second minute, with referee Martin Coy making the call after Isaiah Jones was shoved to the ground by Josh Stokes. Stockport took the lead in the 11th minute with Adama Sidibeh scoring his eighth goal for the team since joining in January. Luton equalized in the 22nd minute through Lawrence, who broke clear and fired a low shot past keeper Corey Addai. Wells then put Luton ahead in the 39th minute, bringing down Kal Naismith's cross with a sublime touch before turning and firing past Addai. The second half was less eventful, but Luton sealed the win with Wells' second goal in the first of 10 added minutes, latching onto Shayden Morris's cross and firing home from six yards. An emotional Wilshere expressed his pride in winning as a manager, stating it surpasses his experiences as a player. He praised his senior players, including Wells, for their crucial role in the success. Stockport manager Dave Challinor hopes the defeat will motivate his team to secure their League One play-off place, with the main goal remaining promotion.
