The cricket boards of Scotland and the Netherlands have expressed strong disapproval over the revised format for the upcoming 50-over World Cup, stating that the changes pose a threat to the sport's integrity and credibility. The International Cricket Council recently announced that the main tournament in southern Africa will feature 12 teams divided into two groups of six, with a preliminary round involving the three lowest-ranked qualifiers. This new format has been met with criticism, as it is seen as reducing opportunities for emerging nations. In a joint statement, Cricket Scotland and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association voiced their disappointment, emphasizing the need for strong governance, transparency, and effective engagement with members.
They argued that the changes undermine the sport's global growth and send the wrong message. Both Scotland and the Netherlands are currently ranked 13th and 14th in the men's ODI rankings, respectively.
Their statement follows concerns raised by the World Cricketers' Association regarding the tournament's revamp. Despite their criticism, Cricket Scotland and the KNCB remain committed to working with the ICC to strengthen the global game.
