At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has etched his name in cricket history by becoming the youngest player to score a century in the Indian Premier League, achieving this feat a mere nine days after his record-breaking debut as a 14-year-old in 2025. Now, Sooryavanshi continues to impress, fueling speculation about his potential debut on the international stage.
His remarkable journey began with a 35-ball hundred in his debut IPL season as a 14-year-old, and he has consistently demonstrated an extraordinary ability to perform under pressure with the Rajasthan Royals in the 2026 edition. Sooryavanshi recently became the youngest player and the fastest by balls faced to complete 1,000 runs in Twenty20 cricket, achieving this milestone with a 36-ball century against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He smashed 12 sixes and five boundaries, securing his second IPL century shortly after reaching 1,000 runs in T20 cricket, having faced just 473 balls. The previous record was held by Australia's Mitchell Owen, who completed 1,000 runs in 533 balls.
Sooryavanshi's century was the third fastest in IPL history, following Chris Gayle's 30-ball ton in 2013 and his own 35-ball hundred last year. When asked about his approach, Sooryavanshi said, "There wasn't much thinking, I just played according to the ball.
The wicket felt good, so I backed my game." He had hit four sixes in the first over and emphasized the importance of visualizing his shots against specific bowlers. The teenager, who has yet to make his senior debut for India, has been in outstanding form this season, having earlier scored two 15-ball fifties against Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins praised Sooryavanshi, calling him his new "favourite player" and admiring his ability to hit the ball hard.
India and Rajasthan Royals wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel also expressed his admiration, saying, "We just cannot believe how someone can hit like that. He is a great talent and we feel good that he is in our team." With such talent, it raises questions about when Sooryavanshi will be given the opportunity to play on the international stage. India has an abundance of emerging talent, and with their T20 side being the newly-crowned World Cup winners, it remains to be seen whether selectors will choose to alter a winning formula.
However, every now and then, a player emerges who cannot be ignored. Sooryavanshi appears to be in the same league as cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. His impressive performance in the U19 World Cup final, where he scored 175 and led India to a 100-run victory over England, further demonstrates his ability to excel against top-level competition.
A packed summer of white-ball fixtures presents ample opportunity for Sooryavanshi to make his international debut. Whether it happens this summer or not, it seems only a matter of time before Sooryavanshi receives the call from India, putting the cricket world on notice.
