San Siro Stadium in Milan May Host ATP Grass-Court Event Starting 2028

Italy is set to host a new ATP 250 grass-court tournament in Milan, starting from 2028, with the iconic San Siro stadium being considered as a potential venue. This development comes after the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation acquired the rights to a 250-level ATP Tour tournament previously held in Brussels. The event is scheduled to take place every June, and while the exact location is yet to be confirmed, Milan's San Siro, with its capacity of over 75,000, is a strong contender. According to federation president Angelo Binaghi, the decision on the venue will be made in due time, but the northern region of Italy is favored due to climate reasons. Binaghi also drew inspiration from the Madrid Open, which is introducing practice courts within Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, suggesting that San Siro could be a viable option. Italy has previously hosted a grass-court WTA tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, the federation is set to host the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030, the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna until next year, and the Rome Masters on clay before the French Open. The Foro Italico is also undergoing improvements, with work on a retractable roof for Campo Centrale scheduled to commence immediately after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia, aiming to be completed in time for the 2028 edition. Furthermore, Binaghi expressed his ambition to elevate the tournament in Rome to the status of a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells and joining the ranks of the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open as one of the sport's most prestigious events. As the tennis season unfolds, Jannik Sinner is aiming to make history by becoming the first Italian man to claim the singles title at the Foro Italico since Adriano Panatta's victory 50 years ago.
