The Significance of World Football Giving Day
On May 26, the global football community will unite for the inaugural World Football Giving Day, a groundbreaking initiative that aims to bring people together to give back. With the support of over 100 organizations and prominent figures in football, including Jurgen Klopp, Juan Mata, and Vivianne Miedema, this event seeks to harness the power of football to drive positive change. The idea behind World Football Giving Day is to create a shared moment where people can come together to participate and donate, particularly in a time of growing global division. The initiative is powered by Common Goal, a movement launched by Juan Mata in 2017, where football figures pledge to donate 1% of their salaries to support projects around the world. To date, over 500 individuals have taken the pledge, raising millions for various causes. According to Mary Connor, CEO of Common Goal, 'Football can either reflect the world or shape it. At Common Goal, we choose the latter, using the game to drive positive outcomes, especially for young people and communities.' Connor emphasizes the need for collective action, stating that 'we shouldn't leave it to just the players' and that 'everyone who loves the game can do something.' Connor's own experiences as a former professional athlete and co-founder of Soccer Without Borders have shown her the power of football to bring people together. She recalls a story from her time in Vietnam, where a simple game of football brought an entire town together, transcending cultural and social barriers. World Football Giving Day aims to become an annual event, building on the momentum of UN World Football Day, which is marked on May 25. The goal is to create a tradition that mobilizes resources to where they are most needed and unifies the global football community. To get involved, people can visit the World Football Giving Day website (www.worldfootballgivingday.org) to donate to one of the 100+ registered non-profits or find their own way to give back in their local community or globally.
