Norris Unveils McLaren's Strategy to Regain Title Momentum

Lando Norris is confident that McLaren can still make a strong push to defend their world titles when the F1 season resumes at the Miami Grand Prix, despite the strong starts of Mercedes and Ferrari in the new era of the sport. The reigning champion has not yet achieved a podium finish in the first three races of his title defense, although his teammate Oscar Piastri finished second in Japan and could have potentially won if not for the appearance of the Safety Car. With almost five weeks to work on their cars, Norris believes there is still ample opportunity to turn the situation around. He stated, "I think we can have a good season, even if we're not where we want to be right now. We still want to push hard for the championship; this isn't about giving up and focusing on next year." Norris emphasized that the team has previously overcome similar challenges and is now stronger than before. He highlighted the importance of resolving the reliability issues that have affected their car and Mercedes power unit. Ensuring that McLaren addresses these issues is crucial for getting back into contention for wins. Norris noted, "We're not in a terrible position, but we've definitely got to work to get back in contention for wins, and even then, we need to keep going to make sure we've got a car capable of winning every single weekend." The team is utilizing the break between Japan and Miami to understand and address the gaps in their car's performance, including extensive simulator time and a recent tyre test at the Nurburgring. Piastri also expressed confidence in the team's ability to close the gap to Mercedes and consistently achieve victories over the remaining 19 races, saying, "We have a lot of work to do to be back at the front consistently, but closing the gap to Mercedes and out-developing the field is something that's within our control. This team has proven how we're able to turn things around, and we're starting in a stronger position than we have in previous examples of this." The Miami Grand Prix, the season's second Sprint weekend, will be live on Sky Sports F1 starting May 1-3.
