Exeter Edges Out Benetton with Slade's Winning Penalty

A dramatic late penalty kick by Henry Slade secured Exeter's 44-41 victory over Benetton, setting the stage for a Challenge Cup semi-final showdown against Ulster in Belfast. After Jacob Umaga's try gave the hosts a 41-38 lead with 15 minutes remaining, Slade equalized with a penalty four minutes later and then sealed the win with another penalty in the 78th minute, sparking outrage among the home fans. In the first half, Exeter took a 14-7 lead following an early try by Olly Woodburn and a penalty try, before extending their advantage to 24-14 with Immanuel Feyi-Waboso's try and Slade's conversion and penalty. However, the hosts leveled the score by halftime, courtesy of Onisi Ratave's outstanding try, Umaga's conversion, and a penalty. Exeter regained the lead two minutes into the second half with Harvey Skinner's converted try, only for Bautista Bernasconi to draw Benetton level once more. Andrea Zambonin's try from short range put Exeter ahead 38-31 in the 48th minute, but Umaga's second penalty and subsequent try, which he converted, handed Benetton their first lead since the eighth minute. Ultimately, Slade's kicking proved decisive. In another match, reigning Investec Champions Cup champions Bordeaux overcame Toulouse 30-15, setting up a semi-final against Bath. Toulouse made a strong start at Stade Chaban-Delmas but Bordeaux's defense held firm until Maxime Lamothe scored off a maul in the 23rd minute. The visitors responded immediately from the restart, with Yoram Moefana failing to catch the kick-off and Romain Ntamack eventually scoring on the right. A late first-half stoppage occurred after Toulouse prop Dorian Aldegheri made head contact with Damian Penaud's shoulder, resulting in a 20-minute red card and a head injury assessment for Penaud. Despite this, Toulouse took the lead into the break with a sweeping passing move that sent Teddy Thomas clear down the right, giving them a 12-5 advantage. After Thomas Ramos strengthened Toulouse's lead with an early second-half penalty, Bordeaux fought back. Matthieu Jalibert collected his own kick through on the right before diving over, and when Antoine Dupont was yellow-carded in the 56th minute for a trip, Bordeaux capitalized. Ben Tameifuna barged over, and Maxime Lucu landed a long-range penalty just after the hour, giving Bordeaux control of the quarter-final tie. Any hopes of a late Toulouse comeback were extinguished when Arthur Retiere touched down Bordeaux's fourth try in the corner, followed by Lucu's penalty with six minutes remaining.
