Grey Dawning Outshines Solness in Thrilling Melling Chase

In a masterful display of strategy, Grey Dawning successfully dropped back in distance to outmaneuver Solness in the JCB Melling Chase at Aintree. Trained by Joseph O'Brien, Solness, who was stepping up from two miles, took the lead early on, sharing it with Gidleigh Park before taking a two-length advantage down the back straight. However, Dan Skelton's Grey Dawning, having finished a brave fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, was always in contention, jumping well and waiting for the perfect moment to launch his challenge. With two fences to go, Harry Skelton moved the 5-1 chance to the front, and although Solness refused to give up, Grey Dawning's stamina ultimately saw him edge out a neck victory. Reflecting on the decision to drop back to two and a half miles instead of competing in the Aintree Bowl, Dan Skelton noted, "We were doing well but not quite winning, so we had to try something different. We felt dropping back in trip was the right thing to do, and it paid off. The cheekpieces were just a little extra something for this trip, and it worked out. The owner, Robert Kirkland, has been very patient, and it's a great outcome for him, especially after a tough time recently. Grey Dawning knows how to perform in big races now, and while we may not be good enough to win a Gold Cup, we can certainly compete in other notable events. Jockey J J Slevin praised Solness's performance, saying, "It was a great run, Joseph had him in great shape. I knew he'd keep fighting, and he did. The winner is a good horse, though." Henry de Bromhead, trainer of the Ryanair Chase winner Heart Wood, who finished third as a 6-5 favorite, commented, "It all happened a bit quickly over a shorter distance on a sharper track. He's probably more suited to two and a half to three miles, but he stayed on well. We'll look to go to Down Royal over three miles early next season." Jo Tizzard was pleased with JPR One's fourth-place finish, saying, "He's had a great season, but he just comes up shy in Grade Ones. He's rated 160, which is a lot of weight in handicaps."
