Djokovic Achieves Milestone 100th Australian Open Win, Eyes 25th Grand Slam Title
Novak Djokovic marked his 100th Australian Open victory in his 2026 tournament opener, but his focus remains on securing a record 25th Grand Slam title. Djokovic's pursuit of this milestone, which would surpass Margaret Court's record, has driven him for the past two years. Following his straight-sets win over Spain's Pedro Martinez, Djokovic expressed his satisfaction, stating, 'Reaching a century of wins is a great feeling.' He added, 'I always strive to perform at my best, and the prospect of making history is a significant motivator, particularly in the latter part of my career.' Djokovic's 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory was achieved in exactly two hours, crucially conserving his energy. A fully fit Djokovic is still arguably the world's best player, even at 38. However, he has struggled to compete with younger players like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in recent times. Djokovic acknowledged that when he's healthy and able to put all the pieces together, he believes he can beat anyone. Since his 2023 US Open win, Djokovic's Grand Slam runs have been ended by Sinner or Alcaraz on five out of eight occasions, with injuries accounting for two other instances. The one time he overcame Alcaraz, in an epic quarter-final clash last year, resulted in an injury withdrawal from his subsequent semi-final. Djokovic's serve was key to his dominant display, dropping just five points across 13 service games and winning 41 out of 44 first-serve points. Former British No 1 Tim Henman praised Djokovic's performance, stating, 'It was absolutely phenomenal... He came out, hit his spots, and was able to dictate if the ball did come back.' Henman emphasized the importance of Djokovic maintaining his serve to conserve energy and create freedom in his return games. With Sinner in his half of the draw and a potential semi-final opponent, followed by a possible final clash with Alcaraz, Djokovic hopes his rivals took notice of his strong start. 'It's always a challenge to begin the competition in the right way, sending the right signal to not just yourself but all the opponents watching you play,' Djokovic said. 'I now have a couple of days to recover and get my body in shape for the next challenge. I'm using every hour I can to prepare.'
