Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has warned Kimi Antonelli that even with a substantial points cushion, the young Italian must stay vigilant for unexpected "black swan" incidents that could jeopardise his title aspirations. Antonelli, who recently secured consecutive victories at Monza and Madrid, now enjoys an 81‑point advantage over teammate George Russell with nine rounds still to contest. The gap to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and McLaren's Lando Norris, who occupy third and fourth places, exceeds 100 points. Despite the commanding position, Antonelli has repeatedly emphasized that he is not allowing the championship battle to dominate his mindset.
Wolff affirmed the sincerity of the youngster's approach, stating, "I promise you he's not thinking about it. The way this kid can compartmentalise, stay youthful yet step into the car with the maturity of a seasoned driver, is remarkable. If Kimi tells himself, 'I'm not thinking about the championship,' that's exactly what he means." Wolff added that Antonelli's support network—including his father Marco, his family, and the broader Mercedes crew—plays a crucial role in keeping the 20‑year‑old grounded.
"We, the parents, the team, and I are constantly reminding him that the season isn’t over yet," Wolff said, underscoring that the race for the title remains open until the final checkered flag. Antonelli first took the lead in the drivers' standings after his triumph in Japan, the third round of the season on March 29.
Since then, his points margin has steadily grown, reaching a season‑high of 81 after the Spanish Grand Prix. With eight wins to his name—six more than any other competitor—Antonelli's record is already historic for a driver of his age. Nevertheless, Wolff cautioned that no one can afford to become complacent. "There are black‑swan events that can appear out of nowhere and strip you of a lead you thought was safe," the Mercedes boss explained.
"That's why Kimi shouldn't let the idea of a championship win distract him from the day‑to‑day work of racing." After clinching the Madring victory, Antonelli echoed his team boss's sentiment, noting that the points lead, while "great," does not guarantee anything. "We have to keep pushing, keep delivering results, and do the best we can every time we hit the track," he said. "You never know what can happen, so we must stay ready for anything and maximise every opportunity. At the end of the year, the results will speak for themselves." The young driver also highlighted the importance of his personal support system.
"I'm lucky to have an incredible team, a great family, and especially my dad, who keeps me grounded," Antonelli remarked. He believes that having reliable people around him helps maintain focus and prevents over‑analysis of the championship battle.
"I just try to do my best each race, drive as fast as I can, and let the rest fall into place," he added. Looking ahead, the F1 calendar continues with a triple‑header weekend in Azerbaijan, where the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will take place on Saturday, September 24, followed by two additional races through September 26. The season's momentum remains high, and while Antonelli's lead is sizable, Wolff's warning serves as a reminder that motorsport is unpredictable, and even the most dominant campaigns can be upended by unforeseen circumstances.
The championship narrative will unfold over the remaining rounds, and both driver and team must balance confidence with caution as they chase the ultimate prize.
