Team GB Aims for Record-Breaking Medal Tally at Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics

For the first time in history, Team GB's Winter Olympic athletes are heading into a Games with the expectation of surpassing their previous medal count, accumulated over 102 years of competition. UK Sport has set an ambitious target of securing between four to eight medals at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. This goal is driven by the team's enhanced competitiveness across multiple sports, a trend supported by recent statistics showing a significant increase in British athletes achieving success at the highest world championship level. A record 21 Team GB athletes have secured gold, silver, or bronze medals at winter sports world championships during the lead-up to Milan-Cortina 2026, surpassing any previous records. Eve Muirhead OBE, who led the women's curling team to gold at the Beijing 2022 Games and now serves as Chef de Mission for Milan-Cortina 2026, emphasized the meticulous preparations in place to support athletes. "We've focused on creating the right environment for our athletes to thrive, and I believe this team has the potential to challenge the status quo and make a significant impact," she stated. The Winter Olympics will commence on February 6, with the opening ceremony at the iconic San Siro Stadium in Milan. Following the Olympics, the Paralympics are scheduled for March, with UK Sport setting a medal target of two to five medals for Paralympics GB athletes. According to Phil Smith, ParalympicsGB's Chef de Mission, the team is well-prepared to deliver impressive performances across a range of disciplines, with the Games presenting a unique opportunity for athletes to captivate audiences in Italy and back home.
