SunRisers Leeds kept their slim chances of advancing from The Hundred group stage alive after a closely contested five-wicket win over London Spirit at Headingley. London Spirit posted 136-7 after being put in to bat, but the Australian pair of Phoebe Litchfield, who scored 30 from 17 deliveries, and Annabel Sutherland, who remained unbeaten on 37 from 21, guided the SunRisers to victory with two balls remaining. London Spirit began strongly with the bat, but SunRisers eventually claimed their first wicket when Amy Jones hit Dani Gibson to Kate Cross at 68 for one.
London continued to accelerate, but their momentum was disrupted by a 30-minute rain delay, and they suffered a collapse from 91 for one to 136 for seven at the halfway point, with Grace Harris also falling after reaching her half-century. In response, Phoebe Litchfield and Bryony Smith made a strong start at the top of the order, making it seem like SunRisers would easily chase down the score. However, three wickets in six balls, including those of Litchfield, Smith, and Lauren Winfield-Hill, pulled London Spirit back into the game, with the hosts still needing 78 from 59 deliveries. As SunRisers closed in on victory, the dismissals of Gibson and Deepti Sharma created some late drama.
A flurry of shots from Jess Jonassen and Sutherland took the hosts near the finish line, and Sutherland's six ultimately sealed the win for SunRisers. Meerkat Match Hero Annabel Sutherland stated, "It's great to get the win. Jess came out swinging with clarity, and her swing of the bat is beautiful.
It was nice to see her hit a few boundaries. Personally, I feel level-headed.
I'm adapting to different situations pretty well. But ultimately, you want to contribute to winning performances, and hopefully, we can win the next few games and build momentum." The result moves SunRisers up to fourth in the table, but they trail third-placed Manchester Super Giants by six points, having played the same number of games.
London Spirit drops to sixth, and their chances of advancing to the knockout stages seem all but over. The Hundred continues with a double-header on Wednesday, featuring Manchester Super Giants vs. Welsh Fire at Emirates Old Trafford and Trent Rockets vs. Birmingham Phoenix at Trent Bridge.
