The Trent Rockets brought an end to the Manchester Super Giants' unbeaten start in The Hundred with a decisive 31-run victory at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. The win was fueled by impressive half-centuries from Sophia Dunkley and Sophie Luff, as well as a remarkable four-wicket haul by Ash Gardner.
The Super Giants' pursuit of 154 runs was derailed early on, with the loss of Smriti Mandhana for just four runs off Samantha Bates. Despite Meg Lanning's valiant effort, the team found themselves in trouble at 31-3. Lanning attempted to turn the tide with her aggressive batting against Katie Levick's leg-spin, but her dismissal for 35, courtesy of Ash Gardner, significantly shifted the momentum in favor of the Rockets.
Gardner's impact continued as she took a stunning catch at long-off to dismiss Kathryn Bryce for 27. Late hitting from Maitlan Brown offered the Super Giants a glimmer of hope, but her run-out, courtesy of Georgia Adams, effectively sealed their fate.
Gardner wrapped up the innings with an impressive 4-16. The Rockets' innings was marked by an early setback with the loss of Beth Mooney to Grace Ballinger. However, Luff and Dunkley took charge, with Luff using her feet to launch Sophie Ecclestone for a six and hitting three consecutive fours off Kathryn Bryce.
Both batters then dispatched Villiers for six over the midwicket boundary as they brought up their 50 stand off 33 balls. Luff reached her first-ever half-century in The Hundred before falling for 51, and Dunkley raised her bat for a 50 of her own before being caught at point off Ecclestone for 57.
The left-arm spinner then claimed the wicket of Bess Heath, and Villiers had Gardner stumped for five as the Super Giants fought back, but the Rockets managed to post a total over 150. Dunkley reflected on the pitch, stating it was tricky and she had to use angles due to difficulty hitting down the ground. She praised Luff for her outstanding performance, saying she brought momentum and helped achieve a good score. The victory marks a significant point in The Hundred, with upcoming matches including a double-header and the continuation of the tournament through to the finals on Sunday, August 16.
