Cyclist Faces 25-Day Ban for On-Road Altercation

The governing body of world cycling has imposed a 25-day ban on New Zealand cyclist Kiaan Watts following an incident in which he struck a fellow competitor during a recent race. Footage from the event, which took place on March 7 in the Netherlands, clearly shows the 24-year-old Watts punching Dutch cyclist Marijn Maas in the head. As a result, Watts will be serving a suspension until May 2, with the one-day team-imposed suspension on March 8 being deducted from the overall suspension period. The Union Cycliste Internationale confirmed that Watts has accepted the sanction. In the aftermath of the incident, Watts took to social media to issue an apology, attributing his actions to a momentary lapse in judgment. His team, NSN Development Team, also extended an apology for the incident. The team emphasized its expectation for riders to conduct themselves in a sporting and professional manner at all times, and apologized to Marijn Maas, the BEAT CC/p/b Saxo team, race organizers, and the UCI Commissaires.
