Celtic has moved into a tie for first place in the Scottish Premiership with Hearts, following a challenging 3-1 win over Falkirk at Celtic Park. This victory came as Martin O'Neill's team successfully capitalized on playing before their title rivals, thereby increasing the pressure on Rangers and Hearts ahead of their Sunday matches. Daizen Maeda and Kieran Tierney scored excellent first-half goals, punishing Falkirk for failing to convert significant opportunities into scores. Although Kyrell Wilson's outstanding half-volley in the second half gave Falkirk some hope of a comeback, Maeda's second goal of the evening, seven minutes from time, secured crucial points in the title race.
With four games remaining, Celtic now defends their Premiership crown, having won four consecutive matches. Meanwhile, sixth-place Falkirk faces an uphill battle to secure a European spot, having won only one of their last five matches in all competitions. The visitors had a tough start, losing key players to injuries in their previous Scottish Cup semi-final defeat. Despite this, they began the match strongly, with Captain Brad Spencer having an excellent volley from distance pushed wide by Viljami Sinisalo.
However, as seen in their previous matches against Celtic, ruthlessness is essential against the champions. Maeda's freakish pressing abilities led to the opening goal, pouncing on Keelan Adams' heavy touch before catching goalkeeper Nicky Hogarth off his line with a clever finish.
Tierney then extended Celtic's lead to two on the stroke of half-time, completing a swift counter-attack. In the second period, Celtic controlled much of the game, with Yang having a third goal ruled out for offside. Falkirk got back into the match with 20 minutes to go, as substitute Kyrell Wilson scored an unstoppable half-volley. However, all hope of a precious point was lost when Maeda scored his second goal of the afternoon, getting on the end of Sebastian Tounekti's cutback to roll in his third goal in two matches.
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill expressed his delight with the result and Maeda's performance, stating that the players have shown immense character despite adversity. Falkirk manager John McGlynn was pleased with his team's performance, noting that they gave it their best effort despite the challenges they faced.
