World-class tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has announced his withdrawal from the Barcelona Open due to a severe right wrist injury. After emerging victorious in his opening match against Otto Virtanen with a score of 6-4, 6-2, Alcaraz experienced wrist pain and underwent medical treatment. Initially, he was set to compete against Tomas Machac in the second round. The two-time Barcelona champion had recently returned to competition after losing the Monte-Carlo Masters final to Jannik Sinner. Following a test on his wrist, Alcaraz decided to pull out of the tournament. In a statement to the press, Alcaraz expressed that the injury was more severe than initially anticipated and that he must prioritize his health to avoid any future harm. As a result, Alcaraz will return home to begin his recovery process with his team, doctors, and physiotherapist, aiming to regain his health in time for upcoming tournaments. His withdrawal from the Barcelona Open may impact his preparation for the defense of his French Open title, which begins on May 24. Meanwhile, British No 1 Cameron Norrie advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating American Ethan Quinn in a challenging three-set match. Norrie is likely to face a competitive quarter-final against Spanish 19-year-old Rafael Jodar. On the WTA Tour, Katie Boulter progressed to the last eight after defeating third seed Jaqueline Cristian, while Iga Swiatek secured a quarter-final berth at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
