Blackburn and West Brom Share Spoils to Enhance Survival Hopes

Blackburn maintained their unbeaten streak with a fourth consecutive clean sheet as they drew 0-0 with West Brom, a fellow relegation contender. With Portsmouth and Oxford having drawn earlier, both teams recognized the significance of a win in boosting their survival prospects. However, it was no surprise that two teams known for their defensive resilience canceled each other out. The only clear chance came in the first half when Aune Heggebo's effort was spectacularly tipped onto the goalpost by Balazs Toth. While West Brom dominated the first half, Blackburn took control in the second. Despite a blocked Mathias Jorgensen shot, they were unable to breach the visitors' resolute defense. Blackburn's unbeaten run now stands at four games, with only one goal conceded during this period, keeping them six points clear of the relegation zone. West Brom, under James Morrison, extended their unbeaten run to six matches, remaining four points above the bottom three. The Baggies made a promising start, with Danny Imray crossing to Isaac Price in the seventh minute, but the attacker shot wide from 12 yards out. Albion would have taken the lead on the half-hour mark if not for an incredible save by Toth, who diverted Heggebo's powerful strike onto the crossbar after Josh Maja's cushioned header. The hosts struggled to create scoring opportunities and only had off-target efforts from Todd Cantwell and Ryoya Morishita to show for their first-half endeavors. Michael O'Neill made half-time adjustments, switching to a 4-4-2 formation, which seemed to benefit Rovers as they forced two early corners. From the first, Max O'Leary's uncertain punch fell to Moussa Baradji, whose half-volley sailed over. Rovers immediately forced another corner, which Tom Atcheson headed wide in the 50th minute. The change in formation gave West Brom's defense more to consider, and Rovers went close again in the 67th minute when Yuki Ohashi's left-wing cross found substitute Mathias Jorgensen in the area, but his shot was superbly blocked by Ousmane Diakite. As the match progressed, it became clear that a single goal would be sufficient for victory. Daryl Dike almost provided it for Albion with five minutes remaining, but Dapo Afolayan slid in to deflect the ball over. Blackburn's Alex Neil stated, "I can see why he's the number one goalkeeper for his country. He's played exceptionally well since I've been here. He is capable of making crucial saves at key moments in the game. Top goalkeepers possess those traits. "We have to be satisfied with four points from two games. I didn't think we played as well today. There's always a concern that the players might not reach the same physical level after Friday's game. "In the first half, we struggled a bit with that, giving the ball away cheaply. The goalkeeper made an incredible save for us, which we needed at that point. "However, in the second half, I thought we were significantly better. We looked like the team more likely to win, but we didn't capitalize on some of the opportunities we had. "We have to be pleased with the clean sheet, which keeps us six points clear of the teams in the bottom three." West Brom's James Morrison commented, "It was fantastic, wasn't it? For an away performance, if that goal had gone in, we would have thought it was a great away performance. But I have to give credit to the goalkeeper; I don't think Heggebo could have done much more. "I thought both teams looked a bit nervous, given our situation, which is normal. I was happy after the game because I've seen my players give everything, but we lacked quality in the final third and with set plays at the end. "I've seen my players give everything, even when we lost the ball, everyone was running back. Balls were coming into the box, and headers were being made, like the block Ousmane made at the end. "On that front, I'm happy, but disappointed with the lack of composure and quality when we got into good areas. "The £250,000 is up for grabs with Super 6, and as always, it's completely free to play. Entries are accepted until 3 pm on Saturday.
