Sinner on Verge of Historic 'Sunshine Double' After Reaching Miami Open Final

Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is just one victory away from accomplishing the prestigious 'Sunshine Double', a feat last achieved by Roger Federer in 2017, following his straight-set triumph over Alexander Zverev in the Miami Open semi-finals. Sinner, currently ranked second in the world, defeated Zverev, ranked fourth, with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), and will now face Jiri Lehecka in the final match on Sunday. Lehecka, seeded 21st, secured his spot in the final by defeating 28th seed Arthur Fils with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 score in just 75 minutes, marking his maiden Masters 1000 final appearance. Sinner, who has won a record 32 consecutive sets at the Masters 1000 level, emerged victorious at Indian Wells on March 15 and is now eyeing his second Miami Open title in three years. The 24-year-old was unable to defend his title in 2025 due to a three-month ban resulting from a positive test for a banned substance. In his match against Zverev, Sinner served 15 aces and successfully defended a break point while leading 4-3 in the second set, ultimately beating the German for the seventh consecutive time. Sinner expressed his satisfaction, stating, 'My primary goal was to produce good tennis, and standing here in the final means a great deal to me. It has been an incredible swing, and I couldn't be happier.' Sinner is expected to be the overwhelming favorite against Lehecka, given his 3-0 record against the Czech player, including a victory at the 2025 French Open. However, Lehecka can draw inspiration from his dominant performance against Fils and the fact that he has yet to drop serve throughout the tournament. Lehecka's potential victory could also propel him to a career-high ranking of 12. He may also find motivation in the 2023 Miami Open final, where his fellow Czech player Jakub Mensik upset Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Following his victory over Fils, Lehecka said, 'Today's match was great, and it has given me a lot of confidence going into the final on Sunday. I must say it was one of the best matches I have played in my life.' Lehecka added, 'I really trusted my game and the work I put in. I knew it would pay off eventually, and today was a great example of how I want to play.' Tennis legends Martina Navratilova and Tim Henman praised Lehecka's performance, with Navratilova stating, 'Lehecka looked like a veteran and played his best tennis under pressure.
