Anderson Advances to World Darts Championship Semi-Finals with Victory Over Hood

Gary Anderson secured his eighth World Darts Championship semi-final appearance by defeating Justin Hood, a fan favorite at Ally Pally, on New Year's Day. Hood had made a significant impact at the tournament and is now set to turn his dream of opening a Chinese restaurant into reality after earning £100,000 for reaching the quarter-finals. However, Anderson proved too strong, ending Hood's impressive debut run with a 5-2 win, achieving a 99.4 average, five 180s, 43 percent checkout, and three ton-plus finishes of 161, 127, and 121. Anderson dominated the opening set with an average of 98 and 3/5 on the doubles, but Hood responded by firing in three 180s and a ton checkout to level the match. The two players exchanged sets, with Anderson eventually taking control, winning three consecutive legs to claim the next set. He then followed up with 72 and 98 combinations, along with a 121 finish, to storm into a 4-2 lead with a remarkable 112.38 set average. In the seventh set, Anderson sealed his victory with a stunning 161 checkout on the bullseye, achieving a 107.36 set average, and will now face either former world champion Luke Humphries or Dutch star Gian Van Veen in the semi-finals. Anderson reflected on his performance, saying, 'I felt in control at times, but I would make mistakes, and he would come back. I started to find my rhythm towards the end, so I'm thrilled to have made it through.' When asked about his upcoming match, he commented, 'Luke Humphries is an exceptional player, and what he has accomplished over the last three years is impressive.' The World Darts Championship continues, with the quarter-finals set to conclude on Thursday night, featuring defending champion Luke Littler against Krzysztof Ratajski and Humphries against Van Veen. Ryan Searle also advanced to the semi-finals with a 5-2 victory over Jonny Clayton, guaranteeing himself at least £200,000 and a rise to world No 7 in the rankings. Searle averaged 91, hit three maximums, and achieved checkouts of 125, 116, and 111 in his win, while Clayton was punished for 30 missed double attempts. Searle will face the winner of the match between Littler and Ratajski, saying, 'It means a lot to me. I think my finishing under pressure was good, and Jonny missed a lot of doubles early on, which made the difference.' The semi-finals will be broadcast exclusively on Sky Sports' dedicated darts channel, with the tournament concluding on January 3.
