Venus Williams Secures Wildcard Entry for Australian Open at 45

Venus Williams is set to make her comeback at the Australian Open after being awarded a wildcard entry, as announced by the tournament's organizers on Friday. This will mark her first appearance at Melbourne Park in five years. Her last participation in the tournament was in 2021, where she was eliminated in the second round by Italy's Sara Errani. With 21 previous campaigns under her belt, Williams has never claimed the title, finishing as runner-up twice, losing to her sister Serena in the finals in 2003 and 2017. Expressing her excitement, Williams stated, "I am thrilled to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the summer. I have so many incredible memories there, and I am grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has been pivotal to my career." At 45, Williams will become the oldest woman to feature in the Australian Open main draw, surpassing Japan's Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she exited in the first round in 2015. Additionally, she has accepted a wildcard for the Hobart International, a warm-up event commencing on January 12, where she will be joined by fellow major winners Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu.
