Warrington Leaps to Fourth as Wakefield Secures Second Spot, Saints Suffer Defeat to York

The Warrington Wolves have climbed to fourth place in the Betfred Super League standings after a remarkable comeback, securing a 48-18 victory over the Castleford Tigers. Following a string of lackluster performances, including four losses in their last six matches and three consecutive away defeats, Warrington struggled in the initial 20 minutes, with the Tigers taking a 16-6 lead at the OneBore Stadium.

However, a strong resurgence led by Matty Ashton, Toby King, and Toafofoa Sipley turned the tide, allowing Warrington to take a 24-18 lead at halftime. James Harrison and Leon Hayes further extended the Wolves' advantage after the break. Ashton scored again, bringing his total to five tries in two matches against Castleford this year, including a hat-trick in their 72-6 victory in March.

Ben Currie also scored, while teenage scrum-half Ewan Irwin excelled with the boot, successfully converting all eight attempts to seal back-to-back defeats for Castleford. Although Castleford suffered a defeat to rivals Wakefield the previous weekend, they had claimed a surprise win over Leeds in their last home match, prompting Warrington head coach Sam Burgess to warn that they would not be easy opponents. On this occasion, Castleford lacked the defensive determination required to stop Warrington's push for a top-six spot. Meanwhile, Oli Field's double dealt a significant blow to St Helens' playoff hopes, despite Jack Welsby's impressive try, as York edged out a thrilling 34-32 victory at the LNER Community Stadium.

The Saints began strongly, with Welsby kicking through to allow Jake Davies to score, and Jackson Hastings adding the conversion. York responded quickly, with Toa Mata'Afa putting Jon Bennison over in the corner, although he was unable to convert his own score. Field capitalized on Cody Hunter's well-timed pass, and although the lead was short-lived, the Knights regained it when prop Paul Vaughan barged his way over, and Bennison added the extra points.

The Knights temporarily lost Ata Hingana to the bin for a high tackle on Davies, but they regained the lead with 53 minutes gone. Nikau Williams touched down, and Bennison made it 28-16, but Robertson's brilliance allowed Tristan Sailor to feed Welsby, completing a length-of-the-field move that was converted by Hastings. Field's second try and a fifth successful Bennison conversion gave the Knights breathing space, but late scores from Robertson and Jacob Douglas gave Saints a chance.

However, regular goal kicker Hastings was holding his glute, and Sailor missed the crucial kick to level the game. In another match, a crucial double from Isaiah Vagana helped Wakefield Trinity secure a 32-12 win over the Catalans Dragons, moving them back into second place in the Super League table. The match was closely contested at the break, with Trinity leading by just four points, but a five-minute spell changed the game, thanks to Vagana's quick efforts. Jake Trueman and Cameron Scott had gone over early to give the visitors the lead, before Catalans responded through Toby Sexton.

After Caleb Hamline-Uele and Matthieu Laguerre added more points to the scoreboard for both teams, Vagana's moment arrived with just 15 minutes remaining, before Scott sealed the deal with his second try. The night was further dampened for Catalans when Ugo Tison was sent to the sin bin for his hit on Jack Sinfield with one minute remaining.

If Wakefield manages to hold onto second place until the end of the season, it will be their best-ever Super League finish. Recent match results include: Huddersfield Giants 22-16 Hull FC on Thursday, July 30, and Hull KR 40-16 Bradford Bulls, Leeds Rhinos 46-0 Toulouse Olympique, Leigh Leopards 8-20 Wigan Warriors on Friday, July 31.
