Big Buck's, widely regarded as one of the greatest staying hurdlers in history, has passed away at the age of 23. The legendary horse, owned by the late Andy Stewart, was a key component of trainer Paul Nicholls' illustrious stable, which also featured notable horses such as Kauto Star, Denman, Master Minded, and Neptune Collonges. Initially viewed as a potential top-class chaser, Big Buck's career took a dramatic turn after a fall at the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup, prompting a switch back to hurdles, a decision that would prove to be a defining moment in his illustrious career. He went on to achieve unparalleled success, securing a record four victories in what is now known as the Stayers' Hurdle, four wins in the Liverpool Hurdle, and three triumphs in the Long Walk Hurdle.
Big Buck's formed a remarkable partnership with jockey Ruby Walsh, captivating fans with his unique ability to overcome mid-race struggles before surging to victory. Nicholls reflected on Big Buck's remarkable ability, stating, 'He was as good as anything I've ever trained, but unfortunately, he couldn't jump a chase fence.' Despite his hurdles success, Nicholls often pondered what could have been if Big Buck's had remained a chaser, speculating that he may have won a Gold Cup if Kauto Star hadn't been competing at the time.
However, Nicholls ultimately believes that reverting to hurdles was the best decision, given Big Buck's invincibility in that discipline. The horse's fourth World Hurdle victory, where he edged out Voler La Vedette, remains a standout memory for Nicholls, who described it as 'very special.'
