Cameron Young, ranked third in the world, has surged into a share of the lead at the Rocket Classic after achieving a remarkable nine-under 61 in the second round in Detroit. Young jumped an impressive 68 spots to reach 10 under, thanks to his flawless round, and now shares the top spot with Patrick Cantlay and Patrick Fishburn. The two-time Open runner-up made seven birdies on his front nine, coming close to becoming only the second player, after Jim Furyk, to shoot two career sub-60 rounds. "It felt like I had a 10-footer for birdie on almost every hole.
I made several in a row on my first nine," Young said. "Then the putter cooled down a bit for my second nine. Overall, it was really solid golf. I'm happy to have played my way back into the tournament after Thursday." Young is now the favorite heading into the weekend and aims to maintain his excellent recent form, which included a runner-up finish at The Open two weeks ago.
The 29-year-old won The Players Championship and Cadillac Championship earlier this year but has struggled to put together a string of strong results. Young will face stiff competition from Cantlay and Fishburn, but 17 other players are within three shots of the lead, including England's Matt Wallace, who is only one shot behind after his bogey-free round of 64, and Rickie Fowler, who shares the same overall score of nine under.
