Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is set to miss the start of the new Premier League season due to a muscle injury. However, this development is not expected to impact the Reds' transfer plans.

Gomez suffered the injury during a friendly match against Sunderland in Nashville and is expected to be out for several weeks. According to new Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola, Gomez's return will depend on how he responds to treatment, but it is unlikely he will be back in time for the season opener against Newcastle on August 23. Iraola anticipates that Gomez will be out for around a month, but the injury is not believed to be serious.

Despite the lack of options at center-back, Liverpool's transfer priorities remain unchanged, with the club focusing on signing a wide forward. They are reportedly preparing to make a formal approach for PSG's Bradley Barcola. Virgil van Dijk is set to return from his post-World Cup break, while new signing Jeremey Jacquet is nearing a return from a shoulder problem.

Giovanni Leoni is still recovering from an ACL injury, and Liverpool may start the season with only Van Dijk and Jacquet as their available senior center-back options. Iraola has been impressed with the performances of youngsters Luke Chambers, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, and Mor Talla Ndiaye, who have stepped in during pre-season.
