Katie Boulter's promising start was short-lived as she fell to a 3-6 6-2 6-2 defeat at the hands of America's Ashlyn Krueger in the Mubadala DC Open's first round. Meanwhile, in Mexico, Cameron Norrie halted his losing streak with a 6-4 6-1 win over Aleksandar Kovacevic to advance to the Mifel Tennis Open's second round. Boulter initially dominated, taking the first set after breaking Krueger twice.
However, Krueger rebounded, making fewer errors and breaking Boulter twice in the second set to level the match. The final set saw Krueger take charge, breaking Boulter three times in five games to secure the victory.
Krueger will face Naomi Osaka next. Norrie ended his six-match losing streak on the ATP Tour with a significant win against Kovacevic. Although he lost his serve early, Norrie quickly regained his footing and, despite struggles with his serve, managed to claim the first set. He then accelerated in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead and wrapping up the match in under an hour to set up a second-round match against either Aidan Mayo or Jamie Duckworth.
