TV commentators had speculated that Glover's actions were a silent protest against AimPoint, which has been criticized for slowing down the game and damaging greens. However, Glover took to Instagram to set the record straight, stating that his decision had nothing to do with AimPoint and was simply to prevent making any marks around the hole.
He explained that he had been approached by an official about spike marks and that other golfers on the course were wearing metal spikes. Glover, who has been a vocal critic of AimPoint, emphasized that he was allowed to tap down spike marks to restore the putting green to its original condition, a rule that has been in place since 2019.
He also stated that he looks forward to competing again this week in Detroit and has no plans to change his shoes, which have metal spikes.
