American golfer Jerry Kelly emerged victorious at the ISPS HANDA Senior Open, held at Gleneagles, by a two-shot margin, earning his third major title on the PGA Tour Champions. Kelly, a two-time winner of the Senior Players Championship, sealed his win with a birdie on the final hole after recovering from a greenside bunker, finishing with a score of 10 under par. His final round saw him card a two-under 68, with a birdie on the 18th hole following three birdies on the front nine and bogeys at the sixth and 11th holes.
Kelly's triumph has secured him a spot at the 155th Open at St Andrews next year. 'The senior Claret Jug is the most coveted trophy for me as a golfer over 50, and to win it in Scotland, the home of golf, is truly an incredible feeling,' Kelly expressed. Meanwhile, Cameron Percy, who shared the lead with Kelly after 54 holes, was unable to break 70 over the weekend, resulting in a shared second place with Darren Fichardt and Matt Gogel, who carded a closing seven-under 63.
Scotland's Stephen Gallacher achieved the highest European finish, securing fifth place with a score of six under par, and also claimed the round of the day with an impressive eight-under 62. Gallacher's remarkable round included five birdies on the front nine and gains at the 10th and 11th holes, before bouncing back from a bogey at the 12th with a birdie at the 13th and a final birdie.
The PGA Tour Champions season has seen Stewart Cink win the first two majors, followed by Padraig Harrington's victory at the US Senior Open, and Zach Johnson's win at the Kaulig Companies Championship, a tournament Kelly won in 2020 and 2022.
