The match saw several key plays, including a stunning touch by former Newcastle centre Matias Moroni, which helped Bristol take the lead. Moroni's chip and recollection from a long chase allowed Lane to score, but the full-back immediately exited the game with an apparent hamstring injury. His replacement, Kalaveti Ravouvou, made an instant impact, scoring on his first touch after Heward collected a loose ball and broke through a gap.
Newcastle managed to get on the board when Adam Brocklebank scored after a series of phases, but Tom Jordan's speed allowed him to round Brocklebank and score, giving Bristol a 21-5 lead.
