Ben Duckett has made a significant impact for Nottinghamshire by scoring his first half-century of the season, thereby strengthening his claim to a top spot in England's Test order. Following a lackluster performance in the Ashes, where he failed to score a fifty and averaged a mere 20.20, Duckett's off-field disciplinary issues had raised doubts about his inclusion in the first Test against New Zealand in June. However, he has since redeemed himself by playing a patient game at Trent Bridge, helping the defending champions respond to Warwickshire's formidable first-innings total of 459 in their Division One clash. Despite Haseeb Hameed's struggles, which continued with a 14-ball duck, and Ben Slater's dismissal for 26, Duckett and Joe Clarke shared a 116-run partnership to steer Notts away from trouble.
Unfortunately, Duckett gifted his wicket away for 62, driving loosely at a delivery from Rob Yates. Meanwhile, Ollie Pope has continued to press his claims for a Test recall with an impressive 69 for Surrey against Essex. Pope, who endured a difficult Ashes series, was dropped after the third Test but has since regained form, following up scores of 103 and 83 not out against Leicestershire with another notable display. In response to Essex's 409 all out, Surrey lost Rory Burns and Jamie Smith cheaply, but Pope rebuilt alongside Dom Sibley, with the pair sharing a 105-run stand before Pope miscued a drive straight back to Jamie Porter.
