An investigation has been launched into a video that appears to show a York player punching a fan during a match. The incident occurred after York secured promotion to the Football League for the first time in a decade with a 1-1 draw against Rochdale on Saturday.
A video circulating online shows a confrontation between a fan and a York player, who was on his knees at the final whistle, before the player stands up and seemingly punches the fan. Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are aware of the video and will be reviewing CCTV footage of the incident. Four Rochdale fans were arrested, including one on suspicion of assault, and a York supporter was also arrested on suspicion of assault. The match saw two pitch invasions, with the first occurring after Rochdale took the lead in the 96th minute and the second after York equalized in the 113th minute.
York's manager, Stuart Maynard, expressed his delight at the team's promotion, saying 'the football gods were with us.' The team's celebrations continued late into the night, with one player revealing he didn't go to bed until 6am on Sunday morning.
