Brighton has unveiled plans for the UK and Europe's first purpose-built stadium for women's football. The project, approved by the local council in October 2023, will be constructed on Bennett's Field, adjacent to the Amex Stadium. The stadium will have a minimum capacity of 10,000 and will be linked to the main ground via a bridge. Initially planned for the 2027/28 season, the opening is now expected to be delayed until the start of the 2030/31 season.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom expressed his excitement, stating that the club has been working tirelessly to find the perfect location. The stadium, designed with female athletes and women's football supporters in mind, will feature bespoke changing and recovery rooms, as well as catering and social spaces tailored to a more inclusive fan base. The £75m-£80m project will be funded by the club, with Bloom confirming that no outside investment will be sought.
The stadium is expected to be a landmark moment for women's football, providing a dedicated space for the team to compete and train. Brighton forward Fran Kirby praised the club's investment in women's football, stating that the new facilities will attract top talent and help the team achieve its long-term goals. Manager Dario Vidosic also expressed his enthusiasm, calling the project 'exciting' and 'pioneering' for the women's game.
