English Football League clubs have decided against adopting a VAR challenge system for the upcoming season, following a demonstration of the proposed system at their annual meeting. As a result, the Championship will continue to rely on goal-line technology, without VAR. Meanwhile, the Premier League will retain VAR, despite a recent survey indicating that 75% of fans are opposed to its use, citing concerns that it disrupts the spontaneity of goal celebrations and detracts from the overall viewing experience.
The survey, which polled 8,000 supporters of Premier League clubs, also found that 94% of fans disagree that VAR enhances the television viewing experience. In related news, football's governing body has expanded VAR's remit to include reviewing second yellow cards and optional checks on corners, although the latter will not be mandatory and must not delay the taking of the corner kick.
