English Football League (EFL) clubs have decided against adopting a VAR challenge system for the upcoming season, following a demonstration by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMO) at their annual meeting. As a result, the EFL will continue to rely on goal-line technology in the Championship, while VAR will remain in use in the Premier League despite its unpopularity among fans.
A recent survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association found that 75% of Premier League fans oppose the use of VAR, with 90% believing it has not improved their matchday experience. Furthermore, 91% of fans feel that VAR has negatively impacted the spontaneity of goal celebrations, and 94% disagree that it enhances the viewing experience on television. Meanwhile, football's governing bodies have expanded VAR's capabilities to include checking corners and second yellow cards, although these checks will be optional and limited to obvious errors.
