English Football League (EFL) clubs have decided against implementing a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) challenge system for the upcoming season. The decision was made after a demonstration of the system was provided by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMO) at the EFL's annual meeting. As a result, the Championship will continue to use goal-line technology, but not VAR. In contrast, the Premier League will retain VAR, despite recent surveys indicating its unpopularity among fans.
A survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association found that 75% of fans opposed the use of VAR, and 90% believed it had not improved their matchday experience. Furthermore, 91% of fans felt that VAR had negatively impacted the spontaneity of goal celebrations, and 94% disagreed that it made watching football on television more enjoyable. Meanwhile, football's governing bodies have expanded VAR's capabilities to include checking corners and second yellow cards, although these checks will be optional and limited to obvious errors.
