Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, has urged the FIA to ensure that the new rules allowing engine development during the 2026 season do not disrupt the competitive order in Formula 1. The regulations include a performance-balancing measure that enables manufacturers trailing the leader by a certain margin to upgrade their engines. Wolff emphasized that the primary goal of this measure is to allow underperforming teams to catch up, not to overtake the leaders.
He stressed that the FIA must implement these rules with precision, clarity, and transparency to prevent any potential manipulation. With Mercedes dominating the early stages of the season, Wolff's team is likely to be the benchmark for other manufacturers.
However, he suggested that only one engine manufacturer, Honda, needs assistance. Wolff expressed his confidence in the FIA's ability to protect the sport's integrity and prevent any decisions that could unfairly alter the competitive landscape.
The FIA is expected to provide further guidance on the implementation of these rules ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.
