Charlton took a significant step towards securing their place in the Championship next season with a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday. The Addicks went ahead in the 49th minute through Matty Godden's goal but were pegged back by Gabriel Otegbayo's equalizer with 15 minutes remaining. The result sees Charlton move six points clear of the relegation zone with just three games left to play, while Wednesday extended their unbeaten run to three matches. The visitors had the better of the early exchanges, with Godden heading wide from an offside position and Max Lowe dragging a long-range effort wide.
Charlton captain Greg Docherty also had a chance, but his shot was saved by Pierce Charles. Wednesday thought they should have had a penalty when Tayo Adaramola was fouled, but the referee deemed the contact to be outside the box. The Addicks came closest to taking the lead before halftime, with Godden's acrobatic effort hitting the crossbar. Godden was not to be denied for long, however, and he gave Charlton the lead shortly after the break.
The forward turned quickly and slotted the ball into the bottom corner after being set up by Lloyd Jones. Charlton could have doubled their advantage when Sonny Carey struck the inside of the post, while Godden also had a chance for his second but was denied by Charles. Wednesday began to gain momentum and found their equalizer in the 76th minute. Charlton keeper Will Mannion failed to hold onto Sean Fusire's cross, and Otegbayo tapped the ball into an empty net after Jamal Lowe's initial effort.
Otegbayo could have won the game for Wednesday late on, but he was stretching and could only place his effort wide. The result means that Wednesday must win their final game of the season against West Brom to avoid becoming the first team to fail to win at home all season. Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen praised his team's performance, saying: 'This was a strong performance from the boys again. Sometimes we were maybe a bit loose on the ball, but to play with courage at this point in the season makes me so proud.' Charlton manager Nathan Jones felt that his team had dropped two points, saying: 'I think it is two points dropped for us today.
They may have had most of the possession, but we coped with it well and we got to grips with it in the second half. We had all the big chances in the game.'
