Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed his decision to retire from professional rugby at the end of the current season. With 70 caps for England between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has had a storied career, winning three Six Nations championships and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Since joining Harlequins from Toyota Verblitz in 2023, he has made 50 appearances, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term. In a statement on Harlequins' website, Launchbury expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had, saying, "The time feels right to step away from rugby." He reflected on his career, expressing appreciation for the experiences and friendships formed during his time with England, Wasps, and Harlequins, as well as his season in Japan.
Launchbury thanked his teammates, past and present, for the camaraderie and memories, stating that rugby has given him a life filled with purpose, friendships, and enduring memories. He also mentioned his desire to remain involved in the sport in some capacity but is currently looking forward to spending more time with his family and watching his children grow up.
