Maro Itoje has expressed his unwavering support for England head coach Steve Borthwick, emphasizing the team's potential to accomplish remarkable feats under his guidance. Despite a disappointing Six Nations campaign, which saw England finish fifth after four consecutive losses, including a historic defeat to Italy, Itoje remains optimistic about the team's future. England's RFU chief executive, Bill Sweeney, has indicated that Borthwick will be given the opportunity to lead the team in the upcoming Nations Championship, where they will face South Africa, Fiji, and Argentina. A successful tour could secure Borthwick's position until the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
Itoje acknowledges that the team fell short of expectations in the Six Nations, but he believes in Borthwick and his coaching staff, including Richard Wigglesworth, Kevin Sinfield, Joe Shaw, and Lee Blackett. The England captain stated, 'We have faith in our approach and are confident that with collective effort, we can learn from our mistakes and move forward positively.' Itoje added, 'Although our performance in the Six Nations was not what we had hoped for, my confidence in the team remains unchanged. I firmly believe that this England team has the potential to achieve great things, and it's essential that we learn from our experiences and progress together.'
