John Cartwright has relinquished his duties as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately. This move paves the way for Steve McNamara, who will assume the role starting from the 2027 Betfred Super League season. Cartwright will remain an employee of Hull FC but has relinquished his coaching responsibilities.

Assistant coach Andy Last has been appointed as the interim head coach for the remainder of the current season. McNamara, meanwhile, will continue in his current capacity as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the duration of the 2026 campaign.

Notably, McNamara's impending return to Hull FC marks a homecoming, as he initially rose through the club's youth ranks before enjoying a storied playing career that included over 160 senior appearances and international representation for England and Great Britain. With a coaching career spanning two decades, McNamara has established himself as a leading figure in the sport, with notable tenures at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England national side, as well as stints in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors.

During his time with Catalans Dragons, McNamara oversaw the most successful period in the team's history, highlighted by a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his enthusiasm for McNamara's appointment, stating, "We are thrilled to have secured Steve's services.

He is a coach of the highest caliber, with an innate understanding of this club and the city." Andrew Thirkill, Hull FC chairman, also voiced his support, saying, "We believe Steve is the ideal candidate to lead Hull FC into our next phase, and we are delighted with his appointment.
