Matt Fitzpatrick claimed his second PGA Tour victory of the season after a nail-biting play-off against world number one Scottie Scheffler at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick had begun the final day with a three-shot lead at Harbour Town Golf Links, and although he appeared to be in control after extending his advantage with two birdies in his first three holes, Scheffler mounted a late challenge with back-to-back birdies to force a play-off. Fitzpatrick regained his composure to win the play-off with a birdie on the par-four 18th, his approach to 12 feet setting up a decisive birdie putt.
The Englishman's win propelled him to a career-high world ranking of third and made him the fourth Englishman to achieve multiple PGA Tour victories in the same season, following in the footsteps of Sir Nick Faldo, Justin Rose, and Luke Donald. Fitzpatrick's victory was marked by a strong start, with a 10-foot birdie at the first hole, but he was unable to capitalize on the par-five second, allowing Scheffler to stay within three shots. A 15-foot birdie at the third restored Fitzpatrick's four-shot cushion, but Scheffler refused to give up, eventually closing the gap to one shot with a six-foot birdie at the 16th.
Fitzpatrick's bogey on the final hole set up the play-off, which he won with a composed birdie. Scheffler's runner-up finish was his second in consecutive weeks, while Si Woo Kim finished third, two strokes behind the leaders. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex in a two-man team event.
