Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed his decision to hang up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 international caps to his name, including three Six Nations titles and appearances at the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups, Launchbury has enjoyed a storied career. Since joining Harlequins from Toyota Verblitz in 2023, he has made 50 appearances, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term.
Launchbury reflected on his decision, stating, "The time feels right to step away from rugby, it's been coming for a while." He expressed his gratitude to teammates past and present, saying, "The friendships we've built go far beyond rugby, and I've been fortunate to represent the teams I have." Launchbury acknowledged that rugby has given him a life filled with purpose, friendships, and memories, but feels his body needs a break. While he hopes to remain involved in the sport, his immediate focus is on spending time with his family and watching his children grow up.
