LIV Golf Season to Proceed Uninterrupted Despite Financial Speculation

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil has moved to alleviate concerns about the league's financial future, stating that the 2026 season will continue as planned without interruption. This comes after a day of reports suggesting that Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund might be reconsidering its financial backing of the league. In a memo to staff, O'Neil emphasized that the season will proceed 'at full throttle,' despite speculation in the media. The memo was sent in response to reports from The Daily Telegraph and the Financial Times regarding an 'emergency meeting' in New York and potential cuts to the league's funding. LIV Golf has already spent $5.3 billion and is projected to surpass $6 billion by the end of the year, according to the newsletter Money in Sport. The league has faced significant financial investments, including $1 billion in signing bonuses for top players such as Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and Phil Mickelson. Despite the uncertainty, O'Neil expressed confidence in the league's future, stating that it will continue to 'put on the most compelling show in sports.' The situation remains unclear, with some players, like Sergio Garcia, choosing to focus on reassurances from LIV Golf Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan. The league's funding and long-term viability remain uncertain, with the Public Investment Fund announcing a new five-year investment strategy that may impact LIV Golf's financial backing.
