Removing Barriers to Women's Football: End the 3pm TV Blackout

Dame Caroline Dinenage MP, Chair of the Culture, Media, Sport Select Committee, argues that numerous obstacles hinder young girls' participation in sports in England. To address this issue, she proposes abolishing the 3pm TV blackout for women's football. The CMS Committee's Game On report reveals a mixed picture of community and school sports in England, with particular challenges for school-age girls. The report suggests that broadcasting women's football during the 3pm Saturday slot could inspire and motivate girls to engage in physical activity. Currently, UK legislation prohibits live broadcasts of football matches that kick off at 3pm on Saturdays. The Committee also recommends that the government require councils and housing associations to remove 'No Ball Games' signs from public spaces, promoting recreational activities. Additionally, the report proposes that schools deliver a more inclusive physical education curriculum, prioritizing enjoyment and comfort, and that teachers receive better training in physical education. The Committee urges the government to commit to stable funding for school and community sports, improved facilities, and a cross-government strategy for a healthier nation, highlighting the social and economic benefits of investing in sports.
