The future of boxing was on full display at the England Boxing National Amateur Championships, with elite athletes showcasing their skills in the finals held in Derby. Ruby White, a World U19 champion and four-time European age group champion, claimed her first senior national title in the flyweight category by defeating Madi Gittens of Box Club. White's victory marked her 60th consecutive win, cementing her position as a force to be reckoned with in the sport. "I'm thrilled to have proved my doubters wrong by winning this tournament in my first year as a senior," White said.
"The transition from youth to senior level is significant, but I've demonstrated that I belong on the big stage and I'm eager to represent Great Britain soon." White attributed her success to her unwavering dedication and unrelenting passion for the sport, stating, "My desire to succeed is stronger than anyone else's, and I train harder than anyone to achieve my goals." In the men's flyweight division, Billy Macey became a two-time national champion after his opponent, Yusuf Uddin, was disqualified and subsequently shoved the referee. Macey emphasized the importance of maintaining a sportsmanlike demeanor, regardless of the outcome, saying, "Win or lose, you must conduct yourself with dignity and respect." Macey also expressed his pride in following in the footsteps of legendary fighters like Joe Calzaghe, who won the championship three times. Adekali Kargbo of De Hood impressed the crowd with his 4-1 split decision victory over reigning 90kg champion Akinola Tijani. Clinton Achusim of Longsight secured the super-heavyweight title in a thrilling bout against Finchley's Anthony Ibekwe, showcasing his exceptional adaptability and punching power.
Other notable winners included Repton's Amo Singh, who won the 65kg title, and GB boxer Joe Turner, who prevailed in the 62.5kg final. The GB boxing team is set to compete in the World Boxing Cup event in Brazil, with a squad comprising Sacha Hickey, Lauren Mackie, and Chantelle Reid in the women's division, and Ellis Trowbridge, Will Hewitt, Patris Mughalzai, Paddy Hewitt, Dimeji Shittu, and Teagn Stott in the men's division. Stott, who won silver at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, is looking to consolidate his position in the heavyweight division and continue his development as a boxer.
