Sinner Regains Top Spot in ATP Rankings After Defeating Alcaraz in Monte Carlo

Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the world No 1 spot after securing a straight-sets victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final. Sinner navigated the challenging windy conditions in Monaco more effectively than his opponent, winning 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to claim the top position in the ATP rankings from Alcaraz for the first time since November 2025. Although the match did not reach the exceptional heights of their previous encounters, it was marked by several twists as Sinner overcame a deficit in the second set. This triumph extends Sinner's unbeaten streak to 22 matches in Masters tournaments, a level below Grand Slams, and marks his first win over Alcaraz on clay since 2022. Sinner joins Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as the only men to have won four consecutive ATP 1000 titles. "The outcome is amazing, and returning to No 1 means a great deal to me," Sinner stated. "However, the ranking is secondary; I am thrilled to have won a major trophy on this surface, which I had not achieved before, and it holds significant value for me." Alcaraz praised Sinner, saying, "It's impressive what you're achieving right now. Winning the Sunshine Double and Monte-Carlo is incredible. Congratulations on the work you're doing with your team." The 17th meeting between tennis' current superstars will not be remembered as a classic due to the windy and overcast conditions, which affected both players' performance. Alcaraz initially broke Sinner but was unable to sustain his lead as Sinner equalized at 2-2. The first set remained closely contested, with neither player able to break the other despite several break point opportunities. Sinner eventually secured the set in a tie-break after 74 minutes, capitalizing on a double fault by Alcaraz. In the second set, Alcaraz broke Sinner early but struggled to hold his serve, allowing Sinner to capitalize on Alcaraz's errors and ultimately win the set 6-3. Sinner's victory marked his first Monte-Carlo Masters title. Both players will now decide whether to compete in Barcelona, where Britain's Jack Draper will also participate, before the ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome leading up to the French Open. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva won the Linz Open by defeating Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3, claiming her second WTA title and fourth career title. Andreeva praised Potapova, stating, "I was struggling to find a solution to play against you today. You're an amazing fighter and an even better person." Potapova, who switched allegiance to Austria in December, expressed her gratitude for the crowd's support, saying, "Playing here for the first time as an Austrian means the world to me. I am really thankful for the support I received this week, which I have never experienced before."
